Instructions for Milk Kefir Grains

Wash your hands with soap and
water before you work with your
grains. Make sure to rinse the
soapy residue off your hands and
your utensils to avoid
contaminating or harming your
grains.

Avoid contact between your kefir
grains and metal utensils if
possible – use plastic utensils
instead. On the topic of plastic,
do not ferment in a plastic
container, much rather use a
glass container. Using plastic
utensils is OK, because your
grains are not exposed to the
plastic for hours on end, causing
potential leaching plastic.

This jar contains 30ml of Milk
Kefir Grains in approximately
500ml of Milk. Remove the
plastic lid, cover the jar with a
clean cotton cloth and secure with
a rubber band. Leave it out on the
counter top out of direct sunlight.
The cloth allows the grains to
“breath” and the elastic band keeps
the critters out (Yes, those bugs
know there is goodness in there!)
After 24-48 hours (depending on
the temperature in your home)
strain through a plastic strainer.
Pop your grains back into your
brewing container and add another
500ml of fresh milk to it.
The “yogurt” that you’ve separated
from the grains is now ready for
use. You can choose to do a
second ferment or store it in the
fridge to slow down the process of
fermentation.

You need not clean your jar
between every ferment, but when
you feel the need to clean it, be
sure to rinse the jar afterwards
with clean water to remove any
soap residue which might harm
your grains.

Milk Kefir grains multiplies well
and soon you will have 3 options:
· to increase your milk
· shorten your fermentation
time
· remove some grains from
your fermenting jar (perfect
gift to a like-minded friend
or family member)
